STAYING IN PLACE

Making Home Work Well for the Life Ahead

Staying in Place means continuing to live in the home you know while thoughtfully considering what may help it remain comfortable, convenient, safe, and supportive over time.

For some people, that may involve only a few simple changes. For others, it may include home improvements, outside services, additional support, or a plan for changing needs.

Staying in Place does not mean that everything must remain the same. It means helping your home continue to work well for you.

Living Well in the Home You Know

STAYING IN PLACE IS MORE THAN STAYING PUT

Staying in Place is about more than remaining at the same address.

It means considering how your home supports your daily routines, independence, comfort, relationships, and the activities that make life meaningful.

It may involve:

Making everyday spaces easier to use
Improving lighting, accessibility, safety, or convenience
Simplifying maintenance and household responsibilities
Bringing in help with cleaning, gardening, transportation, or meals
Planning for possible changes in health, mobility, or energy
Staying connected to family, friends, neighbors, and community
Understanding what different types of assistance may cost

The goal is not to prepare for every possibility. It is to understand what may help you continue living well at home.

START WITH AN ORDINARY DAY

The way you move through your home each day can reveal what is working well and what may be becoming less convenient.

Think about your routine from the time you wake up until the end of the day. Consider how easily you move through the rooms you use most, prepare meals, manage laundry, enter and leave the house, complete household tasks, and enjoy the activities that matter to you.

Is it easy to enter and move through your home?
Are the rooms you use most comfortable and convenient?
Do stairs make any part of your home more difficult to enjoy?
Are the kitchen and bathrooms working well for you?
Is the lighting adequate during the day and at night?
Is home maintenance manageable?
Can you easily reach the people, places, and services you rely upon?
Do you feel connected rather than isolated?

You do not need to find problems where none exist. Simply notice what is working well and what could make daily life easier.

Small observations can lead to thoughtful improvements before a situation becomes urgent.

Looking at Home & Life Together

TAKE A FRESH LOOK AT THE HOME YOU KNOW

A home may be comfortable and familiar, but successfully Staying in Place also depends on what is available beyond its walls.

Transportation, healthcare, household help, family support, social connection, neighborhood services, and ongoing costs can all influence how well Staying in Place works over time.

Important questions may include:

Who could help if you needed temporary or ongoing assistance?
Are dependable services available in your area?
How would you manage transportation if driving became difficult?
Does your home keep you connected to the people and activities you enjoy?
What would home maintenance, improvements, and added support cost?
What would serve as a backup plan if your circumstances changed?

Thinking ahead does not commit you to a decision. It simply gives you more choices and greater confidence.

DECLUTTERING MATTERS - WHEREVER LIFE LEADS

Whether you remain in your present home, move to a different home, or explore a senior living community, decluttering can make daily life feel easier and more manageable.

Decluttering is not only something people do when preparing to move. It can improve safety, reduce household upkeep, make frequently used belongings easier to reach, and create a greater sense of order and calm.

The goal is not to remove everything meaningful or create a perfectly organized home. It is to thoughtfully consider what you use, what you value, and what continues to support the way you live today.

More complete guidance on sorting belongings, handling sentimental items, donating, selling, and organizing one area at a time will be available in our upcoming Decluttering Guide.

THE SUPPORT THAT MAKES STAYING POSSIBLE

Staying in Place is not simply about remaining in your present home. It is about creating the comfort, support, and flexibility that allow you to continue living the life you value.

The purpose of thoughtful planning is not to make life smaller. It is to help preserve the time and energy you want for family, friendships, travel, hobbies, community, and the experiences that bring meaning and enjoyment to your life.

Your home should support your life, not require your life to revolve around your home.

Support
Begin

BEGIN WITH WHAT NEEDS ATTENTION MOST

After considering your daily life, your home, and the support available to you, a few areas may begin to stand out.

You do not need to address everything at once. Begin with what would make the greatest difference in your comfort, safety, convenience, or peace of mind.

Consider:

What would make daily life easier right now?
Is anything becoming more difficult or tiring?
Is there something that could become a larger concern if it is postponed?
Which improvement would provide the greatest benefit?
Is there a simple change that could be made first?

Some needs may deserve attention now. Others can be planned for later, and some may not require any action at all.

The goal is not to create a long list of projects. It is to recognize what matters most and begin there.
